BERCARIA, BERQUERIA, or Berkeria, in middle-age writers, denotes a sheep-fold, sheep-cote, sheep-pen, or other inclosure, for the safe keeping a flock of sheep.—The word is abbreviated from berbicaria; of berber, detorted from verber. Hence also a shepherd was denominated berbicarius and berquarius.
