CANDAHAR, a province of Persia, bounded on the north by the province of Balk; on the east, by

that of Cabul; on the south, by Buchor and Sablestan; and on the west, by Sigistan. There have been bloody wars between the Indians and Persians on account of this province; but in 1650 it fell to the Persians. The inhabitants are known by the name of Aghwans, or Aghbans, who have often endeavoured to throw off the yoke. But, in 1737, they were severely punished for such an attempt. See PERSIA.
