COSMOLABE (from κόσμος, world, and λαμβάνειν, I take), an ancient mathematical instrument, serving to measure distances, both in the heavens and on earth. The cosmolabe is in great measure the same with the astro-labe. It is also called pentacosm, or the universal instrument, by L. Morgard, in a treatise written expressly upon it, printed in 1612.
