CLACKMANNAN, the name of a small shire in Scotland, not exceeding eight miles in length and five in breadth. It is bounded on the south by the frith of Forth; on the north and west by Perthshire; and on the east by Fife. The country is plain and fertile towards the frith, producing corn and pasture in abundance. It likewise yields great quantities of excellent coal, which is exported to England, France, and Holland. It is watered by the rivers Forth and Devon, and joins the shire of Kinross in sending a member alternately to parliament.
