COLONOS, (anc. geog.) an eminence near Athens, whither Cædipus, after his banishment from Thebes, is said to have retired: and hence it is that Sophocles calls the tragedy on the subject, Oedipus Colonus. A place sacred to Neptune, and where stood an equestrian statue of him. Here also stood Timon's tower; who, for his love of solitude, and hatred to mankind, was called Misanthropos, (Paufanias).
