ELBING, a city of Polish Prussia, in the palatinate of Marienburg, situated in E. Long. 20. 0 N. Lat. 54. 15, on a bay of the Baltic sea, called the Frischoff, near the mouth of the Vistula. The town is large, populous, and very well built. It is divided into two parts, called the old and new town, which are both of them very well fortified. The old town has a handsome tower, with a good college. The stadt-hause and the academy are good buildings, with pleasant gardens, which are worth seeing. The place has a considerable trade, especially in surgeon, mead, cheese, butter, and corn. It is seated in a champaign level like Holland, very fruitful and populous. The inhabitants are partly Lutherans and partly Roman Catholics. The Boors in the neighbourhood have as good houses and apparel almost as the nobility of Courland.
