HOOD Island, one of the MARQUESSAS Islands, in the South Sea. It was discovered in April 1774 by captain Cook, who gave it that name from the person who first saw the land. It is the most northerly of the cluster, and lies in S. Lat. 9. 26. W. Long. 139. 13.
