HOPEA, in botany: A genus of the polyandria order, belonging to the polydelphia class of plants. The calyx is quinquefid, superior; the corolla pentapetalous; the stamens are many and coalited into five pencils; there is one style; the fruit is a plum with a trilocular kernel. There is only one species, the tinctora, a native of Carolina.
