HOWEL (James), a voluminous writer of the 17th century, supported himself many years by writing and translating of books. Though he had been a zealous loyalist, he afterwards flattered Cromwell; yet on the restoration he was made historiographer to the king, being the first in England who enjoyed that title. He died in 1666.
