GRATZ, a handsome strong town of Germany, and capital of Styria, with a castle seated on a rock, and an university. The Jesuits have a college here; and there are a great number of handsome palaces, and a fine arsenal. The castle stands on a very lofty hill, and communicates with the river by means of a deep well. The empress-dowager was obliged to retire hither during the war of 1741 and 1742. It is seated on the river Muer, in E. Long. 16. 25. N. Lat. 47. 4.
