HARMOSTES, or HARMOSTA, in antiquity, a sort of magistrate among the Spartans, whereof there were several, whose business was to look to the building of citadels, and repairing the forts and fortifications of the cities.—The word is ἡρμῶς, formed of ἡρμῶν, ἀπλο, concino, "I adapt, concert," &c.
