JALEMUS, in antiquity, a kind of mournful song, used upon occasion of death, or any other affecting accident. Hence the Greek proverbs had their original, ἰαλέμους οἰκονομίας, or ψυχοποιίας, i. e. more sad or colder than a jalemus, ὡς τὸς ἰαλέμους ὑπὲρ τῶν, worthy to be ranked among jalemuses.
