KIGGELARIA, in botany: A genus of the decandria order, belonging to the diœcia class of plants; and in the natural method ranking under the 37th order, Columnifera. The male calyx is quinquepartite; the corolla pentapetalous; there are five trilobous glandules; the anthers are perforated at top: the female calyx and corolla as in the male; there are five styles; the capsule unilocular, quinquevalved, and polyspermous. There is but one species, viz. the Africana. It hath an upright woody stem, and purplish branches, growing 15 or 18 feet high; oblong, sawed, alternate leaves; and dioecious, greenish-white flowers, in clusters from the sides of the branches; succeeded by globular rough fruit, the size of cherries, containing the seeds, which seldom ripen here. As this is a native of warm climates, it must be constantly kept in a stove in this country. It is propagated by seeds, layers, or cuttings, though most readily by seeds.
