KIRKOSWALD, a town of Cumberland on the Eden, 291 miles from London. It had formerly a castle, which was demolished above 100 years ago. It has a market and two fairs. Its church is a very irregular old building; and the belfry is placed distant from the church on the top of an hill, that the sound of the bells might be more easily heard by the circumjacent villages.
