LIMB, Limbe, in the church of Rome, is used in two different senses. 1. The limb of the patriarchs is
Limbat, said to be the place where the patriarchs waited the redemption of mankind: in this place they suppose our Saviour's soul continued from the time of his death to his resurrection. 2. The limb of infants dying without baptism, is a place supposed to be distinct both from heaven and hell; since, say they, children dying innocent of any actual sin, do not deserve hell; and, by reason of their original sin, cannot be admitted into heaven.
