LEUSDEN (John), a celebrated philologist, born
Leutkirk in 1624. He studied the learned languages and mathematics at Utrecht; and then went to Amsterdam, to converse with the rabbis, and perfect himself in the Hebrew tongue. After which he was professor of Hebrew at Utrecht, where he acquired a great reputation, and died in 1699. He wrote many valuable works; the principal of which are, 1. Onomasticum Sacrum, 8vo. 2. Clavis Hebraica & Philologica Veteris Testamenti, 4to. 3. Novi Testamenti Clavis Græca, cum Annotationibus Philologicis, 8vo. 4. Compendium Bibliæ Veteris Testamenti, 8vo. 5. Compendium Græcum Novi Testamenti; the best edition of which is that of London, in 1668, 12mo. 6. Philologus Hebraicus, 4to. 7. Philologus Hebræo mixtus, 4to. 8. Philologus Hebræo Græcus, 4to. 9. Notes on Jonas, Joel, Hosea, &c. He also gave correct editions of several learned works.
