LEEUWENHOEK (Anthony de), a celebrated Dutch physician and naturalist, was born at Deift in 1632, of an ancient family of that city; and acquired a very great reputation throughout all Europe, by his experiments and discoveries. He particularly excelled in making glasses for microscopes and spectacles, and died in 1723. His letters to the royal society of London, of which he was a member, were printed at Leyden, in 1722, in 4to.
