MACASSAR, a considerable kingdom of the island of Celebes, in the East-Indies. The climate is very hot; and would be intolerable, were it not for the rains which fall when the sun is directly over their heads. The soil is extremely fertile, and there are ripe fruits at all times of the year. There are great numbers of monies, who are devoured by monstrous serpents; some of which are so large, that they will swallow one of these animals entire. The Macassars are large, robust, courageous, and greatly addicted to war. They profess the Mahometan religion.
