MENDOZA (Juan Gonzales de), an Augustan friar, of the province of Castile, was made ambassador from the king of Spain to the emperor of China. In 1593, he was made bishop of Liperi in Italy. In 1607 he was made bishop of Chiapa in New Spain, and the next year was removed to the see of Papan in the West Indies. He wrote a history of China in Spanish, which has been translated into several languages.
