MERIDA, a strong town of Spain, in Estremadura, built by the Romans before the birth of Christ. Here are fine remains of antiquity, particularly a triumphal arch, but not now what it was formerly. It is seated in an extensive and fertile plain, 47 miles east of Elva, and 45 south by east of Alcantara. W. Lon. 6. 4. N. Lat. 38. 42.
