MEGALÉ POLIS, (anc. geog.) dividedly (Ptolemy, Pausanias); or conjunctly Megalopolis, (Strabo): A town of Arcadia, built under the auspices of Epaminondas, after the battle of Leuctra; many considerable towns being joined together in one great city, the better to withstand the Spartans. It was the greatest city of Arcadia, according to Strabo.
