EGILOPS, Wild Fescus; a genus of the monococcia order, belonging to the polygamia class of plants, and ranking under the 4th natural order, Gramina.—The characters are: The hermaphrodite calyx is a two-valved glume, triflorous; the corolla a two-valved glume, the exterior valvate terminated by three arista or awns, the interior awnless: Stamina, three capillary filaments; style, two: Seed, one, oblong. Male calyx and corolla, each a glume as in the former; and stamina, the same number.—There are seven species, natives of Italy and some other parts of Europe; one of them, the incurvata, a native of Britain, grows by the sea-shore, and is vulgarly called sea-hard-grass.
