MONTAUBAN, a considerable town of France, in Guienne, and territory of Quercy, with a bishop's see, and an academy. The fortifications were demolished in 1629, because it took the part of the Huguenots. It is seated on the river Tarne, 20 miles north of Toulouse, and 30 south of Cahors. E. Long. 1. 27. N.
