MONTBELLIARD, a handsome and strong town of France, capital of a province of the same name, between Alsace and the Franche Comte. It is seated at the foot of a rock, on which there is a large, strong castle, in the form of a citadel. The prince of Montbelliard has a voice and seat in the college of the princes of the empire. It was taken by the French in 1674, who demolished the fortifications, but it was restored to the prince. It is seated near the rivers Alaine and Doux, 33 miles west of Basse, and 45 north-east of Bezanson. E. Long. 6. 30. N. Lat. 47. 31.
