NARVA, a strong town of the Russian empire, in Livonia, with a castle and a harbour. It was taken by the Muscovites from the Danes in 1558, and by the Swedes in 1581, and they defeated the Muscovites near it in 1700; but it was retaken by the Russians in 1704 by storm, and the inhabitants sent to Auracan. It is seated on the river Narva, 95 miles S.W. of Wiburg, and 172 N.E. of Riga. E. Long. 29. 0. N. Lat. 59. 8.
