STERCULIA, in botany: A genus of plants belonging to the class of monandria, and order of monadelphia; and in the natural system under the 38th order, tricocca. The male calyx is quinquepartite; there is no corolla, but there are 15 filaments. The female calyx is quinquepartite; there is no corolla; the germen is placed on a pillar, and the capsule is quinquelocular, and many-seeded. There are three species, the balanogas, scetida, and platanifolium, all foreign plants.
