ZACYNTHUS (anc. geog.), an island to the south of Cephalonia 60 stadia, but nearer to Peloponnesus, in the Ionian Sea, formerly subject to Ulysses, in compass above 160 stadia, woody and fruitful, with a considerable cognominal town and a port. The island lies over against Elis, having a colony of Achæans from Peloponnesus, over against the Corinthian Gulf. Both island and town are now called Zante.
