ZUTPHEN, a strong and considerable town of the Uni-
ted Provinces in Guelderland, and capital of a county of the
same name. It has a magnificent church, and is surround-
ed with walls. It was taken by the French in 1672,
who in 1674 delivered it up to the States-General. It is
seated at the confluence of the rivers Beikel and Yeffel, nine
miles south-east of Deventer, and 55 east by south of Am-
