ZYGOPHYLLUM, BEAN-CAPER, in botany; a genus
of plants of the class of dicandria and order monogynia, and
in the natural system arranged under the 14th order, Cruci-
nales. There are 11 species, partly shrubby and partly her-
baceous plants, all natives of warm climates, though some of
them are hardy enough to endure the open air in this coun-
try.
