STROMATEUS, in ichthyology, a genus of fishes belonging to the order of apodes. The head is compressed; the teeth are placed in the jaws and palate; the body is oval and slippery; and the tail is forked. There are three species according to Gmelin, the fiatola, paru, and cumaren.
