HANCES, HANCHES, HAUNCHES, or Hanches, in architecture, are certain small intermediate parts of arches between the key or crown and the spring at the bottom, being perhaps about one-third of the arch, and situated nearer the bottom than the top or crown; and are otherwise called the spandrels.
