TULIPOMANIA, the very proper name given to a kind of gambling traffic in tulip roots, which prevailed in Holland and the Netherlands during some part of the 17th century. It was carried on to the greatest extent in Amsterdam, Haarlem, Utrecht, Alkmaar, Leyden, Rotterdam, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, and Meedenblik; and rose to the greatest height in the years 1634, 1635, 1636, and 1637.
