CYTHERA, or Cythera, in Ancient Geography, an island opposite to Malacca, a promontory, and to Boëa a town of Laconia; with a cognominal town, which has an excellent port called Scandea. The island was sacred to Venus, with a very ancient temple of that goddess exhibited in armour at Cythera, as in Cyprus: now Cerigo.
