EPAULETTES, are a kind of shoulder-knots chosen for the soldiers, which are to be of the colour of the facing, with a narrow yellow or white tape round it, and worsted fringe; those for the officers are made of gold or silver lace, with a rich fringe; they are badges of distinction worn on one or both shoulders. Those of the dragoon-guards, horse, and dragoons, are worn on the left shoulder: the light dragoons, and officers of grenadiers, have one on each shoulder: those of the battalion wear one on the right shoulder only, which is to be made of embroidery or lace with a gold or silver fringe. Those of the royal regiment of artillery are to be gold and embroidery, with gold fringe or scarlet cloth, and worn on the right shoulder.
