WATERFORD, a city and sea-port of Ireland, in a county of the same name, with a bishop's see. It is the second place in the kingdom, and is a wealthy, populous city, enjoying many ample privileges. The streets are narrow, and the air is not very healthy; but it has an excellent harbour, suited as well for trade as any in the world, and ships of the greatest burden may ride at the quay. It stands on the river Sure, 8 miles north of St George's Channel, 26 south of Kilkenny, and 75 south by west of Dublin. W. Long. 7. 8. N. Lat. 52. 14.
