BUCCINUM, or WHELK. See CONCHOLGY Index. One of the species, the Buccinum lapillus, or massy whelk, which is a British shell, produces a purple dye, analogous to the purpura, or celebrated Tyrian purple of the ancients. By some, it is supposed to be the same.
