ARTA, by some called Laria, a town of Lower Albania, in Turkey in Europe, with a Greek archbishop's see. It is a pretty large town, and contains about 7000 or 8000 inhabitants, Greeks and Turks; but the former are the most numerous. The cathedral has as many windows and doors as there are days in the year. It is supported by above 2000 marble pillars; and was built by Michael Ducas Comnenus emperor of Constantinople, as appears by an inscription over the great door.
