MARALDI, JAMES-PHILIP, a learned mathema-
tician and astronomer, of the Academy of Sciences at
Paris, was born in 1665. He was the son of Francis
Maraldi and Angela Catharine Cassini, the sister of the
famous astronomer of that name. His uncle sent him
to France in 1687, where he acquired great repu-
tation on account of his learning and observations.
He made a catalogue of the fixed stars, which is
more particular and exact than Bayer's; and has
given a great number of curious and interesting ob-
servations in the memoirs of the academy. He died
in 1720.
