MARIA, or SANTA MARIA, an island of the Indian ocean, lying about five miles east from Madagascar. It is about 27 miles long and five broad; well watered, and surrounded by rocks. The air is extremely moist, for it rains almost every day. It is inhabited by 500 or 600 negroes, but seldom visited by ships.
