LATMUS, in Ancient Geography, a mountain of Ionia, or on the confines of Caria, famous for the fable of Endymion, of whom the Moon was said to be enamoured: hence called Latmus Heros, and Latmus Venerator. In the mountain was a cave in which Endymion dwelt (Scholiast on Apollonius Rhodius). Supposed by Hecateus to be the Philetron Mons of Homer; but by others to be Grius Mons, not far from Latmus (Strabo).
