ILIAC PASSION, a violent and dangerous kind of colic; called also volvulus, miserere mei, and chordafus. It takes its name from the intestine ilion, on account of its being usually affected in this distemper; or perhaps from the Greek verb ελιον, "to wind or twist;" whence also it is the Latins call it volvulus.
