CALCULUS Lateralis, or Lateral CALCULUS, is the same with specious arithmetic, or algebra, so called from its using the letters of the alphabet; in contradistinction to numeral arithmetic, which uses figures. In the lateral calculus given quantities are expressed by the first letters, a, b, c, d; and quantities sought by the last z, y, x, &c. Equal quantities are denoted by the same letters.
