CARDIGAN, the capital town of Cardigan-shire, in South Wales, is seated near the mouth of the river
Teivy, on the Irish channel. It is indifferently large and well-built, containing three wards, one church, and the county-gaol. It is governed by a mayor, 13 aldermen, 13 common council men, &c. Here are the ruins of a castle which was built by Gilbert de Clare, about the year 1100. It sends one member to parliament, and has two markets, held on Tuesdays and Saturdays. W. Long. 4. 38. N.
