CLEVES, the duchy of, a province of the circle of Westphalia, in Germany. It is divided into two parts by the Rhine, and is about 40 miles in length from east to west, and 20 in breadth from north to south. It is a fine agreeable country, and pretty populous. The towns are Cleves, the capital, Calcar, Gennet, Santen, Orsoy, Bureck, and Greit. These lie on the left side of the river. On the right, Dayburgh, Wese, Rees, and Emmerick. There have been great contests about this duchy, but it now belongs to the king of Prussia.
