BANARES, or BENARES, a handsome town of Agra, in the dominions of the Great Mogul, greatly celebrated for its sanctity, and being the university of the Indian Bramins. It is seated on the north side of the river Ganges, in E. Long. 82. 30. N. Lat. 26. 20. See OBSERVATORY.
