GADES, or GADIRA, in Ancient Geography, a small island in the Atlantic, on the Spanish coast, 25 miles from the Columns of Hercules. It was sometimes called Tartessus and Erythra according to Pliny. Geryon, whom Hercules killed, fixed his residence there. Hercules, furnished Gaditanus, had there a celebrated temple in which all his labours were engraved with excellent workmanship. The inhabitants are called Gaditani.
