GATESHEAD, in the county of Durham, is as
it were the suburbs of Newcastle, though it lies in an-
other county, being divided by the river Tyne; over
which there is a fine stone bridge, with an iron gate in
the middle, having the arms of Durham on one side,
and those of Newcastle on the other, which is the bound-
ary between the bishopric and Northumberland. The
church is a fine building, with a very high tower, which
is seen at a great distance; and in the church-yard are
several ancient monuments. Few traces of its ancient
monastery remain, except a stone gateway. The popu-
lation in 1801 amounted to 8597.
