HETERODOX, in Polemical Theology, something that is contrary to the faith or doctrine established in the true church. The word is formed of the Greek ἱτεροδόξος; a compound of ἱτερος, "alter," and δόξα, "opi-

nion." Thus, we say a heterodox opinion, a heterodox divine, &c. The word stands in opposition to orthodox.
