LONSDALE, or Kirkby LONSDALE, a town of Westmoreland, seated on the river Lon, in a pleasant and rich valley of the same name. It is a large well built town, has a handsome church, and a fine stone bridge over the river. It contained 1368 inhabitants in 1811, and is the best town in the county except Kendal.
