NEWCASTLE, a town in America, 35 miles below Philadelphia, on the west bank of Delaware river. It was first settled by the Swedes about the year 1627, and called Stockholm. It was afterwards taken by the Dutch, and called New Amsterdam. When it fell into the hands of the English, it was called by its present name. It contained 2438 inhabitants in 1800, including 235 slaves, and was formerly the seat of government. This is the first town that was settled on Delaware river.
